Double Character Interview

Recently, the main character (Violet) from Crystal Frost’s new book, Sun and Blood, and the main character from my new series (Jemma), Clear Creek Mysteries, sat down for an interview with Violet’s best friend. I’m excited to share their chat with you!

[Lexie] This is gonna be fun! For everyone joining us today, I am Lexie! A special human privileged to know about the wolven clans and welcomed in the Sentinel Clan base.

[Violet] Lexie!

[Lexie] Oh, sorry, Violet. But come on, they were all gonna find out through this interview anyway.

[Jemma] Wait, wolven? Are you talking about actual werewolves?

[Lexie] Yup! Genuine shapeshift into wolves, werewolves. They prefer to be called wolven though.

[Jemma] I always thought they were just myths. Interesting.

[Lexie] Definitely not myths, although they like to let us humans believe they are. Anyway! I’m really excited to have not one, but two amazing people with me today. Why don’t you both introduce yourselves for me? What are your names, and do you have any nicknames?

[Violet] Hello, I’m Violet Draven. I’m 5’4”, but amongst the wolven that is rather short so I have a lot of nicknames having to do with my lack of height. Patrick really likes “Fun-Size”.

[Lexie] Ha, yeah. I’m human, and I’m taller than you.

[Violet] That’s because you’re as tall as they are!

[Jemma] Hi, I’m Jemma Whitlock. No middle name — my mother wanted me to be able to choose my own, but it never seemed important. And no, I don’t really have any nicknames.

[Lexie] Alright, now how about we get to know your families? What are they like?

[Jemma] I’m the only child of a single parent. I don’t know anything about my dad. My mom’s right near the top of the pecking order at an international company, so she’s always busy. I’m not sure we’ve ever been close. She sent me to stay with my grandmother every summer, which was the best thing she could have done. Those summers in Clear Creek taught me that places are made by the people in them.

[Violet] Well, I’m from a powerhouse family. Dad’s the Alpha, which makes Mom the Luna. Jax is my twin brother—

[Lexie] And a punk.

[Violet] AND the future alpha. I don’t really get along with my dad. He’s the typical Alpha-male type and doesn’t have time for his wolf-less daughter. My mom and I are great though. Whenever we need to talk, we make hot chocolate and sit together. She’s always so supportive and encourages me to keep going. Jax… has been a—

[Lexie] Punk.

[Violet] Lexie… You aren’t wrong, but it’s just because he’s running a little hot-blooded with it being so close to our birthdays and trials. He is usually more playful, but that, on top of feeling the pressure from Dad, has him wound a little tight lately.

[Lexie] Alright, next question! Are you spontaneous, or do you need to have everything planned out? Personally, I love being spontaneous.

[Violet] I’m a little of both. I like being spontaneous, but having a plan is also nice.

[Jemma] Like Violet, I’m both. It just depends on what you’re talking about. I’ve spent the past fifteen years traveling the world. I have to have an idea where I’m going — sometimes months in advance, if I need to arrange for visas, or immunizations, or things like that. But once I’m in-country, I’m spontaneous. It’s how I get the best stories for my travel vlog. I find unique people or places, and let them show me things I’d never find on my own.

[Lexie] Guess I’m the odd one out here. That’s okay! Here’s another quick one, for ya both. What’s your favorite animal?

[Jemma] I love the way giraffes are graceful when they run, and the terrifying look in a lion’s eyes during a hunt. But my very favorite animal has to be the Valais Blacknose sheep. Have you seen them? They’re adorable, and so friendly.

[Violet] Giraffes are pretty graceful when they run, aren’t they? I haven’t seen a Valais Blacknose sheep, I’ll have to look them up! Hmm, I haven’t really thought about it much. Animals don’t tend to like wolven. Dogs either respond super well or horribly… so I guess dog?

[Lexie] Sweet. Okay, tell me about your best friend, or friends.

[Violet] Are you asking this one just to hear nice things about yourself?

[Lexie] Maybe.

[Violet] *Sigh* Lexie is my best friend. She’s stubborn and nosey and likes to cause trouble.

[Lexie] Hey, those aren’t nice things.

[Violet] But she’s also really thoughtful and always has my back. We actually became friends when she stood up to a few kids who were picking on me. I’m also really close with a girl name Mya from the clan and Patrick and Jax and Aiden.

[Jemma] Jax is the punk, right?

[Lexie] Yes. Always. And thanks Violet, you’re too sweet. What about you, Jemma?

[Jemma] I make friends everywhere I go, but I haven’t had a best friend since I was a teenager. Her name is Kitty. Now that I’m back in Clear Creek, I’m spending time with her again. I’ve made another good friend, a transplanted southerner named Emmilene. And there’s Brandon. I’d forgotten all about him until I literally ran into the guy when I got back to town, but I think we’re going to be close.

[Lexie] Ooh, is this Brandon cute? Also, did you actually run into him?

[Jemma] I did. I was trying to get around him, and he didn’t want to let me. And yes, he’s handsome, but better than that, he’s a Truly Good Guy.

[Lexie] Sounds like something may be stirring! Okay, last question for both of you. Describe yourself in 3 words.

[Jemma] I’m free-spirited, I believe there’s always reason to be kind . . . and I’m really curious. I’m always being told I’ve stuck my nose in where it doesn’t belong.

[Violet] Blarg. I never like this question.

[Jemma] It’s a hard one, but knowing how we see ourselves helps us understand who we truly are — or, at least, who we want to be.

[Lexie] Ooh, I like this girl. She’s got a good point.

[Violet] Okay, okay. Independent. Fight…y?

[Lexie] How about fierce?

[Violet] Yeah, fierce is better. Aaand… caring?

[Lexie] Those work! Okay, now I have a few questions for each of you. Jemma, you’re up!

You’re a travel vlogger, which means you’ve seen a lot of places, right? Do you have a favorite out of all the places you been?

[Jemma] There are so many places that feel like home, but if I were to choose just one of them, it would have to be a small town in County Kildare, Ireland. It may not be the most visited place in the country, but the people are welcoming, down-to-earth, and just genuine.

[Lexie] I know you were called away from your travels to go back to town. How is that going?

[Jemma] Mary — my grandmother — was worried about some things that were happing in town and wanted help figuring them out. But when I got there, things were worse than either of us had realized. Now I’m staying in Clear Creek until things are resolved.

[Lexie] I hope you get things figured out soon. What about collectibles? Lots of people collect things when they travel: sand, stone, or shells from beaches, dirt from different countries, mugs, etc. Do you have something you like to collect while you’re traveling?

[Jemma] I make it a point to search out local spinners or sheepherders everywhere I go. I collect the best yarns in the world to send to my grandmother.

[Lexie] That’s so cool! Very unique. Now, Violet, I have a few questions for you too. Ready?

[Violet] I don’t know. Should I be worried?

[Lexie] *laughs* I’ll be nice. Tell us about Patrick.

[Violet] Lexie! That’s not being nice.

[Lexie] Come on! Shouldn’t everyone know about your bodyguard who’s standing right outside waiting for us to be done?

[Jemma] Your family doesn’t let you see friends without a bodyguard? Yikes. I think I’m glad my mom wasn’t big on parenting.

[Violet] Well… He isn’t just my bodyguard. Patrick is Jax’s best friend. Ugh. Okay, fine. Patrick moved into the clan a few years ago and, after earning Jax’s trust, was ordered to protect me. It didn’t use to be that big of a deal, but every year that’s gone by without my wolf spirit, the worry over me has increased. Patrick takes his duties very seriously and tries to mask his emotions, but he’s actually a really thoughtful and sweet guy. And before you ask, no, there’s nothing going on. I… It can’t. I promised Jax years ago that I wouldn’t go there.

[Lexie] I think that promise was made to be broken, but moving on. What is it like to be the alpha’s daughter?

[Violet] I don’t know anything else so it’s normal to me. I guess there are a few things I have to watch out for. Wolven who are new to the clan are careful around me. Some guys think if they are with me then they’ll get a higher rank. Some of the girls think if they get close to me, they can get to Jax for the same reason. And some wolven are even afraid of me—or more of the possibility they will hurt me and get thrown out of the clan or worse. It’s really hard to find someone to train and spar with because of that.

[Lexie] Speaking of sparring, doesn’t Patrick train you?

[Violet] What is with you and Patrick questions?

[Lexie] Just keeping things interesting.

[Jemma] *laughs* And trying a little matchmaking.

[Lexie] *chuckles* Just a bit, but they really only need a little nudge. It’s clear they’re both crazy about each other.

[Violet] *rolls eyes* And now you’re spreading rumors. Patrick only cares for me as a friend, protectee, and trainee. He’s an excellent trainer. Before he came along, I had hit a plateau in my progress. It didn’t take long for him to see how he could help. I may be at a disadvantage without a wolf spirit of my own, but with Patrick’s help, I learned how to defend myself and can take down many members of the clan.

[Lexie] And with that jumbled mess of emotion, we have run out of time. Jemma, thank you for letting us bother you and answering my questions. I hope we see you again sometime! Good luck getting everything settled in town. Violet, we should probably get going before Patrick accuses me of trying to kidnap you.
